Ride2Work Day

As the warmer weather approaches, so do more opportunities to get outdoors and do some activity.

At Monash Sport, we are all about staying healthy and active, which is why we (along with Monash University) are in full support of National Ride2Work Day on Wednesday 12 October 2016.

Ride2Work Day is all about jumping on the bike, riding to work or class, and meeting others in the Monash community who do the same thing. All the while having a free breakfast as you meet new people and talk all things cycling.

Caulfield, Clayton and Peninsula campuses will be holding Ride2Work Day, with Monash Sport hosting the Peninsula campus Ride2Work Day event 8am-9:30am at MPARC. Both staff and students are welcome to register, and everyone that rides to campus on the day will receive a free healthy breakfast, puncture repair kit, mudguard, coffee cup and water bottle. Bike n Blend will also be available at Peninsula campus, where participants will be able to blend their own smoothie.

If you would like to be involved, register for any campus here.

Hope to see you there!

Mega Swim A Mega Success

Over $19,000 were raised at the 2016 MS 24 Hour Mega Swim, held at the Doug Ellis Swimming Pool on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 September.

The MS 24 Hour Mega Swim is a fun team relay event where teams have a swimmer in the water for the entire 24 hours, and compete for laps swum and money raised, in support of people living with multiple sclerosis.

Eight teams consisting of over 100 participants jumped into the pool and swam for the 24 hour period, achieving a grand total distance of 638.45km!

Not only did the teams swim the equivalent distance of Melbourne to Devonport, Tasmania (and back a little bit), but they have also raised a fantastic amount of money to help people living with multiple sclerosis via Go for Gold Scholarships.

We're looking forward to hosting this event next year, building on these achievements and continuing to engage Monash University and City of Monash communities to be actively involved with this event.

A big thanks to all participants, their friends and families who came to support, the volunteers and the Monash Sport staff!

The top three individual fundraisers:
- Sarah Coletti: $1,385.00
- Jess Dimattina: $1,221.24
- Annabelle Plant: 1,065.00

The top fundraising team: Speeched Whales: $7,393.74

Surf's Up!

As part of Monash in Motion, a joint initiative between Monash University and Monash City Council to get people moving, our Water Wise adult students were able to take part in Surf's Up!

This session included a range of activities to help build on students swimming skills and safety around water. The students learnt basic CPR and first aid protocols and experienced the wave pool to help students strengthen their swimming in different conditions, all with the support of Monash Sport and Active Monash staff.

Both the students and the staff had a great time, extending their skills and knowledge beyond their usual lessons. The feedback has been fantastic and we are looking forward to holding this event again in the future.

Clayton Campus Group Fitness Studio Refurbishment

The current look of the Group Fitness Studio as refurbishments begin.

The refurbishment of the Group Fitness Studio has begun, as the old floor and mirrors are torn down and the ceiling is replaced.

Works scheduled to be completed include:
  • The installation of a superior heating and cooling system.
  • Creation of a new roof and ceiling.
  • Installation of a purpose designed sprung floor.
  • Purchase and installation of an enhanced audio system.
  • Acoustic wall cladding.
  • Additional and improved lighting.
  • Efficient and accessible storage solutions for equipment.
Draft timelines will see works commence mid-late November with the new studio available for use early – mid February.

A summer timetable will be in effect during this time, with group fitness classes taking place in alternative locations within Monash Sport.

This refurbishment project will not only provide a welcoming, motivating and exciting exercise space but will also ensure our group fitness classes continue to enhance the exercise experience for all our members.

Completion of the Monash Tan Track

The Monash Tan Track at Clayton campus has officially opened. The running and walking track features a 1 kilometre and 2 kilometre circuit and will provide students and staff with a high quality environment for enjoying the warmer weather that spring promises. The Tan track has already hosted two major events - The Light Up the Night Fun Run/Walk event as part of the University's Winterfest in August, and the Global Walk/Run event as part of the University's 10,000 Steps event in September.

Key features of the track include:
    •    Full lighting around the 1 kilometre and 2 kilometre loops to encourage safe usage in the evenings and early mornings.

    •    Drink stations strategically located along the track.

    •    Exercise equipment positioned at three strategic locations along the track.

    •    Connections to Scenic Boulevard, Blackburn Road and the new elevated bridge at Jock Marshall Reserve
.

The new raised footbridge near Jock Marshall Reserve is in the final stages of its construction, and will be open for use in the next week.

We look forward to seeing you on the track!
